When I was involved in Big Brother in the past, I once did a segment where I explained some "Words of Wisdom", basically setting out guidelines that I think help players make it farther in the game. I find that these methods work well, for me. Other strategies may work well for other players, but I have found that these rules I follow allow me to have success in Big Brother. Whether they will do so in this game, or not, it will remain to be seen. But, I wanted to detail some of my rules and talk about the success I've had in the past, and how it has benefited me now.
RULE #1: NEVER MAKE A PECKING ORDER/ELIMINATION LIST
The game of Big Brother is a game that is always changing week to week. This is in contrast to its counterpart, Survivor. On Survivor, a group of individuals can create an alliance and vote the same way week after week. On Survivor, only the person that wins Immunity is safe. Everyone else is vulnerable. So, if your target wins Immunity one week, you just pick a different person to vote out. It can affect your goals, but some seasons it has only created a slight bump in the road for future winners. But, on Big Brother, only the individuals that are nominated can be voted out. It's not like Survivor, at all. And that depends on who wins HOH. Because if HOH doesn't want to nominate someone you want out, they're not going to do it. Sometimes, people you don't want to win HOH will win HOH, sometimes your alliance will have the power and other times your alliance will not. But, when that happens, you need to be prepared to go to work and make sure that you're not the one that ends up on the block.
One factor that can be used to determine whether someone is nominated is that the HOH knows this person wants them out of the game. Sometimes, it's because the house guest told others they want the HOH out, other times it's guilt by association because you're in an alliance. Guilt by Association is something that you have little control over. The only way to cure yourself of that is to make a deal, jump ship, or appear that you're not the center of the alliance. But, you have control over whether information about who you're targeting gets out to the house. This is when you have to be very careful about what you do and what you say.
My rule for being careful is to never make a pecking order/elimination list. Don't ever go to a house guest and say you want to get rid of half of the house. That's a fatal mistake. Because when you make it known that you want to target multiple individuals in the future of the game, you risk that the individual is going to expose that information to others. You become an easy target when you start saying you want to get rid of several people. Because all the other person has to do is message those house guests and state that you want to get rid of them. Then, it's so easy to nominate/backdoor you, because you've made it impossible to trust you. You ruin your game when you think too far ahead. Plus, you might need some individuals later on in the game when you decide that maybe your strategy needs to change. And if you've stated that you wanted to target that person, you've isolated yourself. From that point, you put yourself at the mercy of the house to decide your fate, rather than take power into your own hands and decide how you will distribute it.
Obviously, in order to get people out of the house, you have to make an alliance. Making an alliance with other individuals states unequivocally that your interest is to keep the individuals in your alliance in the game and individuals outside of your alliance out of the game. But, sometimes what remains silent can benefit you later on. Sure, we all create alliances in Big Brother, and sometimes those alliances fall apart. But, if you never explicitly stated that you were going to target a certain person, then you provide more opportunities later in the game. If you decide you want to jump ship and change the game, then you may have an easier time doing so. You can state that you never intended to target that person, and nobody can prove that you did. Nobody can send conversations from you to those other house guests showing you targeted them. You can demonstrate that you created an alliance to target certain house guests, but now your plans are changing and you can benefit someone else.
But, in Big Brother, you have to talk about targets. You can't just sit on the sidelines. If you don't influence and create targets, someone will create a target out of you. So, you have to take that risk and talk about house guests that you want out. But, the rule of thumb I use is: try two at a time, only use a third if you're worried about the Veto.
PAST EXPERIENCE
Jake Frato is the lesson that I use to describe how violating this rule can be bad for your game. Back in Big Brother 6, I had an alliance with myself, Cody, Yami, and Amanda called The Spartans. For the first two weeks, we had power in the game as Cody won first HOH, Yami won second HOH. I won the third HOH. Amanda was concerned about JR and Jake, because she knew that they were going to target her in the game. I was very concerned about going after JR and Jake because I didn't want one of them to win HOH and retaliate against me. But, in Week 3, Jake approached me and Cody. He wanted us to join in an alliance with himself, JR, Brendan, Jose, Hannah, and Kay. In this conversation, he explicitly stated that he wanted to get Amanda, Yami, AJ, Jennifer, and Taylor out of the house. HE STATED ALL OF THEIR NAMES! At that point, Cody and I had leverage. I was willing to take a risk and nominate JR and Jake if I had more people that were willing to work with me and protect me in the game. So, what did we do? Well, the Spartans showed AJ, Jennifer, and Taylor what Jake said and demonstrated where his allegiance was in the game. So, from that point, the seven of us formed an alliance called the Coalition. That week, I nominated JR and Jake. JR quit. The next week, Hannah won HOH, but Amanda ended up quitting before eviction. But, after that, I won Week 5 HOH and AJ won Week 6 HOH, and Jake and Brendan were evicted in back to back weeks. Because Jake revealed the long term plan, he ended up ruining it. The leverage was given to me and I used it. I made a bigger alliance in the house. I was influential in getting the Coalition together. And Jake, JR, and Brendan were evicted.
Now, the story doesn't end there. See, even though the Coalition was a strong alliance, it didn't mean it was going to stay together forever. Cody, Yami, and I were a trio and AJ, Jennifer, and Taylor were a trio. After JR, Jake, and Brendan were evicted, Jose won the next HOH. Now, the thing about Jose was: he wasn't in the alliance. But, I had never expressly targeted Jose in the game because I liked the guy and I had a bond with him. We talked a lot and we had an understanding. Well, when Jose won HOH, he had an option. He could have nominated me and Yami. AJ and Jennifer went to him and tried to convince him to put us up. But, because of what AJ and Brianna did to Jose in Big Brother 5, Jose remembered missing out on the chance to get to the Final Two. So, I credit that and my relationship with Jose that caused him to put up AJ and Jennifer, instead of me and Yami. Both of them were ticked Jose did this, noting that me and Yami were more dangerous together, but Jose had made his call.
Big Brother 6 was a season where I felt that I perfected many of my rules. And this is where I feel that I best used this rule to my advantage and was able to get myself further in the game.
CURRENT SEASON:
How do I intend to use this rule this season? Well, I'm currently making use of it now. I have an alliance called the Private Eyes with Bryson, Christian, and Luci. I definitely want this alliance to stick together for many weeks in the house. Because, I talk with these three the most in the game. Part of making good allies is making good connections. Right now, in the game, my targets are Corey, Gabe, Matt, and Tyreke. The reason is because I don't have good connections with them. I've barely spoken with Matt. Gabe is the same way. Corey, the few conversations I have, they have all been negative. I didn't like his confrontational attitude and he doesn't seem to get humor. He seems too intense. So, that's why he's my number one target. And with Tyreke, he may already have me figured out as a great player and if he gets HOH, then I will be tempted to buy that Immunity from the Chen Store. I also haven't built a connection with James, but I think he's the last person left that I think I could make a good connection with. Now, at this point, I have only stated my intentions to target Corey. I've stated that Gabe would be a good nominee because he didn't vote in the eviction. But, that justification is one that someone can bounce back from. I can always tell Gabe: look, you're doing better. I thought about you this way in the past, but you've proven yourself. So, sometimes the reasons can be important, because people may be understanding of that down the road. But, in regards to me wanting out Matt and Tyreke, I have stated nothing of the kind. Why? Because I don't want to give them a reason to target me. I don't have a good relationship with them, now, but that might change next week or the week after. Unless my alliance keeps power or wins HOH next week, the rest of my targets in the game will remain in my own brain.
I am not sure whether the Private Eyes is a private alliance or if people know about it. Bryson, Christian, or Luci could have other plans. Maybe they spilled the beans, it's hard to say. But, there may come a day when I have to make other plans. Right now, I have good relationships with Sam and Van. I also have Joner, but it was recently revealed that Joner sent scares to Christian in the recent HOH Competition. I hope not to win HOH next week, because Christian might want to target Joner. I don't want to do that, because it's not good for my game to do that, while I'm HOH. But, if Christian is HOH, then I will absolutely support that. Because I always have the opportunity to win HOH the next week and do what I want. So, it's all about timing. But, there may come a day when I may need to make a move and if I don't target carefully in this house, I'll ruin that possibility. Van and Sam may be the key to making a big move some day. Heck, James might be that person. I could even see Tyreke or Matt doing that. But, I have to make that a possibility and in order to do that, I must watch how many people I talk about getting nominated and evicted from the house. If the Private Eyes is revealed, it will show that my intentions were to protect Christian, Luci, and Bryson. But, it doesn't close out other possibilities of working with people in the future.
HENCE, NEVER MAKING A PECKING ORDER. Only target two at a time and pick your targets wisely. Corey is the person I am least likely to do anything with in this game. Getting him out this week would be golden. But, the possibilities for the future are endless. Hence, I hope that if I follow this rule, I will find success once again in the Big Brother House.
